ご先祖様の魂をお迎えし、そしてお見送りするお盆。その最後の日に、熊谷駅前を流れる星川で灯篭流しをやったにゃ。70年前、終戦の日の前日に起きちゃった熊谷空襲は、みんなに戦争の怖さを教えてくれるにゃ、、、。毎年恒例の灯篭流しでは、そこでの犠牲者の魂を追悼するため1950年に始まったんだにゃ。これを機に、平和のために大切なものは何か、みんなにも考えてもらいたいにゃ～。

 

 星川の灯篭流し

 

1. A summer religious event, “Toro-nagashi” was held in Kumagaya at the end of Bon holidays.

 

2. The annual event took place along the Hoshikawa river near Kumagaya Station on August 16. Some 7,000 people joined the festival to commemorate the victims of the deadliest air raid on Kumagaya on August 14, 1945, one day before the end of the war.

 

3. The participants wrote their prayers on their lanterns and let them afloat on the river to see the victims’ souls off.

 

4. The central area in Kumagaya was heavily bombed and 266 citizens were killed in the air raids. They tried in vain to dive into the river in a bid to escape the massive fire of the aerial bombing.

 

5. A Kumagayaite said he will keep making a lantern for the event forever to let his children know the tragedy of the Kumagaya Air Raids and the war.

１．夏の宗教的行事である「灯篭流し」がお盆の暮れに熊谷で行われた。

２．その年中行事は８月１６日、熊谷駅近くの星川沿いで行われた。約7000人がそれに参加し、終戦の前日、1945年８月14日（に発生した）悲惨な熊谷空襲の犠牲者を悼んだ。

３．参加者は各々の灯篭に祈りの言葉を記し、それを川に浮かべて犠牲者の魂を見送った。

４．熊谷の中心部はひどい爆撃を受け、266名の市民がその空襲で亡くなった。彼らは空襲による大火を逃れようと川に飛び込んだが無駄だった。

５．市民のひとりは、これからもずっと灯篭を作り続け、子供たちに熊谷空襲や戦争の悲劇を伝えていきます、と語った。
